Coast Resort, Ghana

This project aims to restore the forts and castles on the coast of Ghana and to design a masterplan for enhance the development of the Country’s potentiality in the field of tourism.

Portuguese, English and Dutch sailors have built from XVII to XIX century forts and castles along the coast of Ghana in order to control the trade of slaves and to control the area. They are Ghana government properties inscribed on the World Heritage List. They cannot be sold and they are managed according to the UNESCO guidelines.

Through the UNESCO-WTO programme for cultural tourism in Slave Route sites, Ghana has received funds from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) for the purpose of creating a museum, training staff and organizing exhibitions. This funding will also be used for the restoration of several sites.





Some of the castles are in ruins, some used as offices, restaurants or other purposes.

The Forts and Castles of Ghana are National Monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage List; Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) has the legal custody of these properties.
